Dublin; Friday, April 1, 2011: Releasing internal IT staff for more strategic work is the main reason for outsourcing in Ireland according to the 2011 annual survey on outsourcing by managed services specialist, Hibernia Evros Technology Group. Other key reasons for outsourcing in order of priority are to focus on core business, access to broader IT skills, cost saving and more efficient IT delivery.
“This is positive news for IT people,” commented John Kennedy, Sales & Marketing Director, HiberniaEvros. “Releasing IT staff for more strategic work has jumped from number three to the top priority for outsourcing. The results of our latest survey suggest that companies want to use their internal IT resource more productively and outsource the job of making sure the system works.”
The HiberniaEvros study, which can be downloaded HERE, finds that almost three quarters (72%) of the companies surveyed are outsourcing at least some part of their IT. 17% are considering outsourcing further IT functions while 30% are thinking about it. Over 120 companies responded to the survey.
The most common functions outsourced are hardware/infrastructure (76%), followed equally in second place by network management, IT service desk, IT monitoring and web hosting (all 40%). 38% are outsourcing security/antivirus while 22% outsource data backup.
Having sufficient in house staff is cited as the main reason for not outsourcing. This is followed by the belief that it is cheaper to manage in house, fear of loss of control and security concerns.
Of those who had fears, security/confidentiality was listed as the main barrier to outsourcing. This is followed in second place by fear of reliance on an outside supplier and thirdly loss of control. Finding the right partner was the fourth most common concern.
“All of these issues can be addressed by making sure to partner with an experienced provider and ensure that strict Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are in place,” commented John Kennedy.
The HiberniaEvros study also throws up some interesting findings in relation to cloud computing. 36% of Irish businesses are considering outsourcing to the cloud while 3% already use some cloud services.
The company recently announced a €1.6m investment in a new Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) division which will allow organisations to outsource in full their infrastructure to a data centre managed 24x7 by HiberniaEvros experts.
