MiMail.ie Technical FAQ

What do I need to use MiMail.ie?
The email addresses used in your company need to have a unique domain name. The domain name is the part of the name that follows @ in an email address and is typically related to your company name – e.g. Fred@acme.ie).
Someone else looks after my Email – Can I still use MiMail.ie?
It does not matter if you manage your own email server or have it hosted elsewhere, you can use MiMail.ie if you have your own domain name. However, if you use a free email service (such as hotmail or Gmail) or have an email address provided by your internet provider (e.g. eircom.net), then you cannot use MiMail.ie .
How can be sure that MiMail.ie will work with my email service?
MiMail.ie is based on well-established standards and will work with any email service that uses these, such as Microsoft Exchange, MDaemon, Postfix and SendMail. Similarly the vast majority of hosted mail services will work seamlessly with MiMail.ie.
That’s all very well, but what if it doesn’t work?
We will work with you and your service provider to ensure there will not be any issues beforehand. In the unlikely event that there are and MiMail.ie cannot be successfully implemented, you will not be liable for any fees.
What do I need to do to use MiMail.ie?
All email relies on what is known as an MX record to determine where it should be delivered. The only change needed is to your email set up is a change to this record so email is delivered to MiMail.ie first and not directly to its current address.
How do I do that?
Do not worry. Our team of technical experts will instruct you on how to change these records – whether you have your own email server or use a hosted mail service.
Will MiMail.ie stop every email threat?
Unfortunately there is no solution available that is 100% guaranteed to stop all email-based threat. New viruses are being developed every day and they are increasingly sophisticated. As new viruses are developed, so are new solutions. We update our anti-virus information every 15 minutes to ensure you are getting the most up to date protection available. We are confident that we can filter 99.9% of all such threats before they reach your network.
Is there anything else I can do?
Email is still the most common method used to infect your network with these threats, but they can be carried in infected files copied from another computer, on infected websites or other forms of communication such as Instant Messaging. Therefore we recommend that local anti-virus protection be deployed on your PCs. If you are running your own email server there are a range of other security measures that can be deployed. Once MiMail.ie is activated, we can provide you with advice and assistance in all of these areas.
What if my email server goes down?
If your email server goes down for any reason – planned or unplanned – MiMail.ie will store all email that we could not deliver to you. Once your email server is working again, the mail will be delivered to you.
